Smart Start Training Workshop Registration

 

Smart Start PUZZLES Center has experienced, knowledgeable staff that offer early childhood trainings to meet diverse needs, including workshops such as First Aid and CPR, Playground Safety, Quality Interactions and Curriculum Planning.  To register for any of the following workshops listed below, please click on the corresponding Pay Now button or call Smart Start of New Hanover County 910-815-3731.   The location for all trainings will be at Smart Start of NHC at 3534 S. ITS SIDS

Participation in this workshop meets ITS SIDS training requirements. An overview of SIDS, identification of SIDS risk factors and descriptions of ways to reduce the risk of SIDS in child care will be provided.

Fire Safety and Extinguisher Training

 

Date:CHOOSE 1:Tuesday, April 17th, 6:30pm - 8:00 pm (1.5 credit hours) OR Saturday, May 19th, 9:00-10:30am (1.5 credit hours)

Cost: FREE (Registration is required)

 

Location:Fire Station at 801 Market Street/upstairs training room

This session will discuss the different classes of fire extinguishers and proper use. It will also allow participants the opportunity to see a fire being extinguished. By the end of the class, participants will be able to select the proper fire extinguisher and use it to put out a real fire. This session also focus on when to use a fire extinguisher in a child care setting, procedures for doing so, and evacuation plan steps when planning to use an extinguisher.

 

 

All Children Have Special Needs Sometimes ... When, Where, Why and How to Refer Children for Help

 

Discussion topics will include the following:

 

  • The importance of Early Intervention for children who have or may be at risk for developmental disabilities
  • Warning signs that may indicate the presence of a disability
  • Services available to help children and families
  • When and how to make a referral for help

Recognizing and Reporting Child Abuse and Neglect

 

This workshop covers what every child care provider should know about the signs and symptoms of child abuse and neglect, the reporting process and strategies for prevention.

Car Seat Class

 

How many children are you transporting in your van or bus? Are they restrained safely? Learn about the NC Child Passenger Safety Law, common mistakes people make, Who is really liable for the children you are trasporting and how long do they really have to stay in a car seat.

Playground Safety

 

Participation in this workshop will meet playground safety training requirements, including DCDEE rules and safety tips for outdoor play.

Asthma Education for Child Care Providers

 

Asthma is the leading chronic disease among children. Come learn about how to recognize if a child has asthma, common asthma triggers, signs and symptoms of asthma trouble and how asthma is treated and managed.

Start Safe: Water

 

Start Safe: Water is a free educational program designed to teach children ages 2 to 4 and their families about water safety and provides educators the tools they need to deliver important water safety information. The program emphasizes three key messages associated with using layers of protection in and around water - Lock, Look, Learn. Come learn all about this free program you can use in your classroom. This program will be best for teacfhers working with children 2-5 years old.

What About Me?

 

Feel unappreciated? Overwhelmed? Want to come together with other early childhood professionals to find out how to cope with some of these feelings? This group experience will allow discussion about frustrations and what might abe done to overcome some of these negative experiences when doing one of the most important jobs in the world - loving and nurturing children. This support group will meet for 3 one hour sessions (for a total of 3 credit hours) to identify, develop and enhance our individual strengths and solutions to the problems we face in the classroom or child care environment.

Start Safe: Fire

 

Are you planning for Fire Prevention Month? Want a free easy curriculum to use with children 3-6 years old? This program will help children to identify what is hot and stay away, to call a grownup for help when they see something unsafe, to help their families make a home escape map and practice family fire drills, to know the sound of a smoke alarm and to go outside. We will provide you with all the materials including lesson plans, DVD, poster book, activity sheets and handouts for parents.

Windows to Your Future; A Portfolio Building Workshop

let's look through your professional window, your "Professional Portfolio". Is it organized and easy to view or is there a blizzard of confusion when it comes to all this paperwork?!? Bring training, education, and employment documentation that you would like to include in your portfolio. Together, we will build an organized portfolio any professional would be proud to own. Notebooks will be provided.
