Star-Rated License Application Assistance Meeting

 

Date: Monday, January 9th 7:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. (NO CREDIT HOURS PROVIDED)

Fire Safety and Extinguisher Training 

 

Date: CHOOSE 1: Tuesday, January 10th, Wednesday, February 29th, or Tuesday, March 13th 6:30 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. (1.5 credit hours)

 

Instructor: Meg Langston, New Hanover County Fire Rescue & Wilmington Fire Department

This session will discuss the different classes of fire extinguishers and proper use.  It will also allow participants the opportunity to see a fire being extinguished.  By the end of the class, participants will be able to select the proper fire extinguisher and use it to put out a real fire.  This session also focus on when to use a fire extinguisher in a child care setting, procedures for doing so, and evacuation plan steps when planning to use an extinguisher.

 

 

 

Managing Infectious Diseases in Child Care Settings  

 

Date: Tuesday, January 17th AND Tuesday, January 24th 6:30 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. (3.5 credit hours)

Are you planning for Fire Prevention Month?  Want a free easy curriculum to use with children 3-6 years old?  This program will help children to identify what is hot and stay away, to call an adult for help when they see something unsafe, to help their families make a home escape map and practice family fire drills, to know the sound of a smoke alarm and to go outside.  We will provide you with all the materials including lesson plans, DVD, poster book, activity sheets and handouts for parents.

Feel unappreciated?  Overwhelmed?  Want to come together with other early childhood professionals to find out how to cope with some of these feelings?  This group experience will allow discussion about frustrations and what might be done to overcome some of these negative experiences when doing one of the most important jobs in the world- loving and nurturing children.  This support group will meet for 3 one-hour sessions (for a total of 3 credit hours) to identify, develop and enhance our individual strengths and solutions to the problems we face in the classroom or child care environment.

Medication Administration in Child Care

 

Date: Saturday, March 31st 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. (6 credit hours)

Location: Smart Start of NHC

 

This training involves the introduction of a medical vocabulary as well as training and practice in communication and administering medication skills.  This training will focus on child care provider roles for giving medicine in child care, cover federal and state laws related to giving medicine in child care, help providers recognize where to store and dispose of medicine, define the "six rights" of medication administration, and provide information that will assist trainees with developing or revising a site-specific medication administration policy.
