Smart Start
 

Family Support programs are community-based services that promote school readiness by increasing the stability and involvement of parents in their children’s lives. These programs increase parents’ confidence and competence in their parenting abilities, thereby empowering them to create supportive environments for their children. Smart Start of New Hanover County connects families to the information and resources they need to support their children's emotional, intellectual, and physical development.


Family Assessment Coordination


A Universal Screener visits mothers of all newborns at New Hanover Regional Medical Center with resources and information.  Each family is surveyed and provided relevant resource and referral information based on identified needs.  New Hanover County Health Department, 798-6690.


Information Services


Community resource information related to health, family support, and child care service for families with children age birth to five.  Smart Start of New Hanover County, 815-3784.

 

Family Community Connections

Educates the community about child care quality, school readiness, child development, health, family support, and integrating family life into the workplace. Enrollment services for NC Health Choice/Health Check insurance is provided. Provides services to Spanish-speaking families, including assistance in applying for health insurance and finding quality child care. B.E.A.R. (Building Excitement About Reading)


Promotes early literacy by offering free literacy events and books to children in Title I Pre-K, Head Start, and More at Four programs. (Support from Reading Is Fundamental, Inc., New York Times Foundation, Wilmington Rotary Club, and the Wal-Mart Foundation). Smart Start of New Hanover County, 815-3731.

Parenting Education Planning Alliance

Assesses New Hanover County parenting education programs, identifies family needs and resources, facilitates a parenting education coalition, and assists in the development of new parenting education activities.  Center for Social Work Research & Practice at UNCW/Smart Start of New Hanover County, 815-3731.

In July 2007 and with

funding from the Cape

Fear Memorial Foundation,

Smart Start of New

Hanover County was able

to bring Brazelton

Touchpoints Center®

trainers to Wilmington for a

Touchpoints Individual

Level Training.

 

A multi-disciplinary group

of five local service

providers have recently completed the 

Touchpoints Community Level Training.

This team will be responsible for training and supporting

other New Hanover County service providers in implementation of the Touchpoints™ Approach.
