4th Annual First 2000 Days Summit Scheduled

This year’s event to focus on Communicating on Behalf of Young Children

There are only 2,000 days between the time a baby is born and when he or she will begin kindergarten.  During that time brain architecture is forming, creating the foundation for all future learning.  Child development is a dynamic, interactive process that is not predetermined. It occurs in the context of relationships, experiences and environments. Harvard University neuroscientist Jack Shonkoff puts it this way, brains are built, not born.

Each year on President’s Day, Smart Start of New Hanover County and a committed group of faith leaders asks the community to gather to plan how we can ensure that all of our children have everything that they need in their first 2,000 days of life.  During the first 2000 of life, children learn critical life skills and build the foundation which will determine their success in school and in life.

This year’s Summit will be held on February 20th at Lifepoint Church at 3534 S. College Rd., Wilmington, from 9am to Noon.  The keynote speaker will be Michelle Hughes, Executive Director of NC Child.  Following her talk, attendees will break out into small groups to discuss how they can make a difference within their community and scope of work to benefit young children.

The event is free, but attendees are asked to register in order to attend.  To register, send an email to or call 815-3731.
