5th Annual First 2000 Days Summit Scheduled

This year’s event to focus on strategic planning on ways to address toxic stress

There are only 2,000 days between the time a baby is born and when he or she will begin kindergarten.  During that time brain architecture is forming, creating the foundation for all future learning.  Child development is a dynamic, interactive process that is not predetermined. It occurs in the context of relationships, experiences and environments. Harvard University neuroscientist Jack Shonkoff puts it this way, brains are built, not born.

Each year on President’s Day, Smart Start of New Hanover County and a committed group of faith leaders asks the community to gather to plan how we can ensure that all of our children have everything that they need in their first 2,000 days of life to be successful in school and in life.

This year’s Summit will be held at Lifepoint Church at 3534 S. College Rd. on February 19th from 1-5pm.  Following a screening of the documentary, “Resilience,” participants will be led in a discussion and breakout groups to discuss a strategic plan for our community to confront issues of toxic stress for young children in New Hanover County.    Input from a wide variety of community sectors is sought, such as local government entities, non-profits, for-profit businesses, faith communities, early childhood service providers and decision-makers and others.

The event is free, but attendees are asked to register in advance.  To register, go to or call 815-3731.

Smart Start of New Hanover County is part of Smart Start, North Carolina’s Early Childhood Initiative.  Smart Start of New Hanover County acts as a local leader in development a comprehensive, collaborative approach to serve the needs of all children, birth to 5, in New Hanover County.
