Smart Start of New Hanover County in conjunction with the Wilmington Faith Community hosted the 5th Annual Wilmington Community Summit. The event took place on February 19th at Lifepoint Church.

The Summit highlights the importance of the first 2000 days of life, the approximate number of days between the time a child is born and when they show up for the first day of kindergarten – a critically important time when a child’s chances at success in school and in life are determined.

This year’s event highlighted the screening of the movie, Resilience, and was followed by a discussion and strategic planning for how our community can respond together to help children’s resilience in the face of poverty, violence, parental stress and more. We hosted Jan Shepherd, the director of the health department in Buncombe County to share with us what the Asheville community did following their community’s viewing of this film. A trailer to the movie can be found here.  Following the screening we held a discussion with other community stake-holders to work towards a strategic plan to address how we can together tackle some of our area’s greatest challenges.
