Smart Start Dedication to Education Bonus Opportunities

Individual  and Center Bonuses
Each year Smart Start of New Hanover County’s Professional Development Connections offers bonuses to individual early educators who have attained certain educational milestones and to child care centers who have achieved at least five of seven education points.

Applications and eligibility criteria will be mailed to all star-rated child care centers in New Hanover County serving children birth to five years of age.

Our most recent Individual Bonus eligibility requirements and application will be available in late 2018.

Healthy Smiles: Oral Health Program

The Healthy Smiles: Oral Health program will occur from October 1, 2020 to June 30, 2021. Child care centers and family child care homes will work directly with the Smart Start Physical Activity and Nutrition consultant to implement this program. Participation in the program includes the following:

  • Up to 3 staff members from the child care program or family child care home (director, administrator, teacher, etc.)
  • Attendance at 3 workshops, each includes: 2 DCDEE credit hours & no charge
  • Technical assistance between workshops
    • Identify and set goals using Go NAPSACC
    • Build upon current practices and identify areas of improvement
    • Implement oral health practices (lessons, policies, family engagement, etc.)
  • Present at final workshop on improvements, highlights of process/program, etc.
  • Complete final Go NAPSACC assessment
  • Identify sustainability/next steps in oral health
  • Receive materials and resources for the child care program/family child care home

Up to 15 child care programs/family child care homes will be chosen for this program. Upon acceptance, sites must sign a Letter of Agreement stating involvement in and agreement to fulfilling all program requirements. Any aspect of the Healthy Smiles: Oral Health Program that is not completed will forfeit receiving materials and resources from the grant.
