Health & Safety

Healthy growth and development is the cornerstone of a child’s success. For this reason, the health benefits of children should be one of the principal goals of comprehensive early childhood initiatives. This is reflected in North Carolina’s Smart Start initiative with goals highlighting the enhanced use of preventive health care and the earliest possible detection of developmental concerns, with appropriate referral for early intervention services. Smart Start of New Hanover County provides the following health related services:

Wee Live Fit is a collaborative effort to increase awareness of the early childhood obesity epidemic. One in five children in the United States is overweight or obese by age 6.  In New Hanover County, a group of concerned agencies meets once a month to address the childhood obesity epidemic.  The goals of weeLiveFIT is to have families consider two different areas of their lives – eating smart and moving more. For further information, contact your child’s medical home.

Medical Home

A medical home is the one place you can take your child for all your child’s health care needs.  For check-ups, sick visits, accidents, special health needs, immunizations (shots).  Medical home is the doctor’s office, a community clinic, or a local health department.  It is where the staff knows you, your child, and your child’s health history.  You can call your Medical Home during office hours and after hours.  Click here for more information.

No one plans to get sick or hurt, but most people need medical care at some point. Health insurance covers these costs and offers many other important benefits. NC Health Choice/Health Check is an option for insurance for children who don’t qualify for Medicaid. To find out if you qualify, please visit NCDHHS.
